Superior, Wisconsin-based Stack Bros.Mechanical Contractors, Inc. is a 127-year-oldcompany serving the Duluth/Superior areaincluding Northern Wisconsin, Northern Minnesota.The Stack family has been prominentin the Superior business community since1890 when William J. Stack and his brotherJohn founded the company now known asStack Bros. Mechanical Contractors, Inc. Atthe time the plumbing, heating and mechanicalbusiness was founded, Superior wasgrowing rapidly and the two brothers beganthe plumbing and heating business to servehomes and the growing number of businessfacilities in the area. To this day, the companyis family run with Bill Stack, William’sgreat grandson, at the helm. In fact, whencalling the company, don’t be surprised ifhe’s the one that answers the phone.

Expansion

The company moved from downtownSuperior into a new location in April of 1995.The new location provided expanded spacefor fabrication, heavy equipment storageand space for the growing fleet of servicevehicles. Stack Bros. also works with majorfood processors in boiler installation andrepair work. The company also works with 23school districts and all the major hospitals inthe Duluth Superior area and their satelliteclinics on plumbing, heating and mechanicalconstruction, temperature controls, burnerboiler and other equipmentmaintenance andretrofit.

In the Spring of 2013Stack Bros started constructionat a new companysite. The new buildingmore than doublesthe square footage of theexisting main companyoffice and shop. Theproject was completedin 2014 consolidates allservices at the new site.

Projects

Stack Bros. commercial plumbing crewsare involved in a broad range of plumbingprojects from student housing projects at areauniversities; retail Super Centers and retailexpansion projects; as well as area apartment,condominium and new home construction.Stack’s design build approach has alwaysfocused on energy efficiency improvementand sustainability. Stack Bros. achieves thesegoals by focusing on building control integrationusing when possible a mix of control systemsand application that combines historicalsystems/products with digital integration. Thecompany’s experience in retrofitting HVACand plumbing systems has made them a leaderin the areas they serve for both remodelingand retrofit of HVAC and plumbing systems.

Stack crews had a major involvement inthe Mechanical HVAC systems for the recentlycompleted Douglas County Metro Center.Other projects completed by Stack Bros.include hospital expansion in Cloquet, MN,multiple projects at the University of Wisconsin-Superior including Ross-Hawks Halland Barstow Hall, the new Medical Schoolat the University of Minnesota-Duluth, thechilled water system at UMD and the SolonSprings School as well as the new schools inHayward, WI. Other area projects include theformer City-County building renamed CityCenter in Superior WI, Superior Fiber Products,Superior Waste water Treatment Plant,the 2012 expansion of Cloquet CommunityMemorial Hospital, as well as re-piping andboiler replacements at many facilities suchas hospitals, schools, industrial facilities,commercial buildings and churches.

Fleet

The company’s fleet currently consistsof 90 to 95 percent John Deere machinesalong with some Hitachi. Bill especially likesusing Deere excavators, “They lift more thanthe competition,” he said. And Nortrax iscertainly a part of that. Bill said that Nortraxhas been easy to build a working relationshipwith, “We need each other and that is recognizedon both ends,” said Bill.
