S&S Forestry Plus John Deere 648G III Skidders and a new 648L Skidder are hard at work at a recent jobsite.

Prior to being with S&S Steve owned and operated a JD 70D with a Fortec 1300 processor head and a JD 440 Forwarder conversion. Tom owned and operated a 440C skidder and a Barko slasher both had run these pieces for numerous years. In 1999 because the need for increase in production and additional manpower Tom and Steve partnered together. They still kept their individual businesses separate from an accounting standpoint. In 2005 Tom and Steve formally established S&S Forestry Plus. As the need to fill different mill contracts they continued to add additional equipment to their fleet as well as additional employees. Currently S&S operates (3) JD 648G III skidders and recently added a new JD 648L skidder. To fell in front of the skidders they utilize a JD 643J feller buncher and a self-leveling track feller buncher. Building and maintaining logging roads is critical. They utilize their JD 700H to perform the road building operations. S&S utilizes (2) slasher units. In 2009 S&S was working on a federal sale of blow down timber and were having difficulties getting rid of the round wood. They started to look at different markets for the wood. At that time they didn’t have a biomass contract in hand with some research they elected to purchase a Morbark 40/36 chipper. Soon they secured a market for their bio-mass product and the business continued to grow and recently added a Morbark 1300 tub grinder to fill out their logging operation.

Besides buying timber sales from the majority of private sales they also purchased federal, state, and county timber sales. Within the last few years they built a strong reputation with some larger road building contractors to provide land clearing for roadways and developments. Our diverse equipment and efficiency has provided us an advantage to grow their business. “We strive to build a great reputation in the logging industry”. Moving product to the mill promptly and efficiently is very important to our business. We move most of our own product to the mills. Therefore, we have a separate company called S&S Trucking of Cornell, WI. We operate 11 trailers with trucks to switch between different trailers depending upon what product we are selling to the mills. Our trailers include crib, tipping, and walking floor trailers. We have our trucks to ship short wood as well as our biomass product.

Maintaining our rolling fleet and logging equipment is vital to our operation. We have a portable semi-trailer fully equipped on our job sites for maintenance and handling breakdowns. For more in depth product maintenance and repair we utilize our full service shop facility. During breakup season we thoroughly go through each piece of equipment for preventative maintenance and repair.

We chose to do business with John Deere because they have earned our trust and have built our confidence in their products. We are pleased with the product service and reliability in the Deere brand and the service from which Nortrax provides.
