Mike Rose Excavating
Mike Rose credits the dedication of his wife, Lynn, his foreman, Brett Hansen,
and his hardworking employees with 33 years of steady growth and success.

Mike Rose Excavating Lutsen, MN

Mike Rose grew up in St. Paul but his heart was at his grandparents’ cabin in Lutsen, Minnesota, on the shores of Lake Superior. “I loved the terrain, the lake, the people, the weather, and the lack of traffic,” Mike explained. He liked it so much that as a young man he lived in Lutsen during the summers working for a local excavating contractor operating equipment and driving a truck.

After 25 years of working with the contractor, Mike opened his own business, Mike Rose Excavating. He started with a John Deere 350C Dozer, John Deere 500 Backhoe, a pickup, and a borrowed trailer. He specialized in septic installation, road building, demolition, foundation excavation, and water line installation. After six months, he earned enough to purchase a used trailer and 1975 GMC dump truck - which he still owns.

Mike is still working hard and loving every minute of it after 33 years in business. “When I first started, I took out an ad in the local paper. The phone wouldn’t stop ringing, so I said the heck with that - no need to advertise. Word of mouth is the best advertising you can have,” said Mike. “We always make sure to take care of our customers whether it is a call on a Sunday or Christmas day….we go. People appreciate a job well done at a fair price.”

Mike credits his dedicated and hardworking employees with the success of his business. His wife, Lynn, has done the invoicing and bookkeeping since the company opened, and foreman, Brett Hansen, has been with the company for 22 years.

The equipment fleet has grown along with the employees. The company now has a fleet consisting of a John Deere 624H Wheel Loader, 120LC Excavator, 672A Motor Grader, 80C Excavator, 450J Crawler Dozer, five trucks, and several other utility pieces. When asked about his John Deere machines, Mike said, “We never have to fix our excavators - our primary equipment. They never break down; they don’t ever even leak… that’s pretty good!” He noted. “Our operators grease daily and we make sure to do regular maintenance.”

When it’s slow in the winter, Brett goes through each piece, one at a time in the shop, making sure they are ready for spring. “That saves us lots of time and money avoiding breakdowns,” He explained.

Mike likes to deal with Nortrax referring to the people there as friends. “They are good to deal with, the parts people and the service department is always very friendly and helpful. I even call down and ask what the weather is like, they are my Duluth weather station,” he laughed.

Mike is a loyal customer who we are also proud to call a friend.
