You might say David McCabe, owner of McCabe Construction Inc. in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, lived a full life even before starting his own construction business.

David grew up in Hastings, Minnesota and studied at UW Alaska – Fairbanks where he received a degree in Geological Engineering. He worked for construction companies in Alaska while attending college, developing his interest in the construction business.

David moved to Eau Claire in 1988 after accepting his first job working for a utility construction company as a project manager. He later moved to a position at American Materials Corp. and eventually headed up their construction division.

McCabe Construction Inc. got its start in 1997 when American Materials decided to dissolve its construction division. David arranged to complete the company’s current jobs, hired many of their employees, and purchased some of their equipment. David began with two partners (but has since bought them out), and also Brady Shepler, the company Vice President who David says is instrumental to their continued success along with their outstanding employees. The majority of McCabe’s business focuses on commercial site work, municipal road and utility projects and Department of Transportation highway and airport construction.

McCabe’s fleet is approximately 40 percent John Deere and includes:
  • A 724K Wheel Loader
  • A 750J Dozer
  • Two 700J Dozers
  • A 700K Dozer
  • A 650J Dozer
  • A 450H Dozer
  • A 470G Excavator purchased in 2013. This was McCabe’s first John Deere Excavator. They owned two Large Hitachi Excavators in the past.
  • 100 percent of McCabe’s dozer fleet is John Deere.
“John Deere Hydrostatic Dozers are very productive, reliable, and operator friendly,” said David. “We’re extremely happy with the John Deere Extended Life undercarriage using the SC-2 Track Bushings. They definitely out-perform other brands.”

McCabe Construction outsources all of their equipment service needs and Nortrax has maintenance contracts with McCabe Construction on all pieces of John Deere Equipment. David feels that outsourcing all of his equipment service needs provides an overall lower service expense for the business than providing it themselves.

“The best thing about Nortrax is the employees,” David said. “They are very efficient when consulting with our business; they are very responsive, assist in solving problems and provide solutions to our business needs.”

David has three children who are all either currently in college or have graduated. His oldest son, Andrew, graduated from UW Eau Claire and is currently employed at Wipfli CPAs, in Eau Claire. His daughter, Katie, is graduating from UW- Stout in Education and was recently married. His son, Jake, attended UWMadison on an athletic scholarship and is currently playing for the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres organization.

David began flying at the age of 23 and purchased his own plane eight years ago. He enjoys flying to most his son’s hockey games and to the family cabin in Northern Minnesota. Dave also enjoys bicycling, canoeing, and fishing.
