Moving on up in Northern Minnesota

As so many others do, Jeremy Stecker a third generation logger, journeyed into the family forestry business with his father, Tom, in 1999, by opening JATCO, Inc. a custom felling business in Embarrass, Minnesota. Together they felled for more than 30 logging contractors throughout Northeast Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin. Along the way, Jeremy watched and learned the particulars of the logging business, picking up tips from not only his father’s experience but also the experiences of the loggers for whom they worked. During this time, Jeremy worked full-time for JATCO while attending school full-time at Duluth, Minnesota’s College of St. Scholastica where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

After graduation, Jeremy continued to operate the felling business with his father until mid-2014 when ever-changing market conditions pushed the pair to sell. After doing so, Jeremy struck out with his own cut-to-length business.

By October 2014, Jeremy was the proud owner of a new John Deere 703JH and a used Ponsee forwarder. His decision to go cut-to-length was made by understanding the needs of the private landowners and agencies he would buy timber contracts from and his interests – this was the type of business he wanted to run. “I felt CTL was the best fit because it has an environmentally friendly footprint and allows you to fully merchandise the renewable resource to its greatest market value. It’s also fuel efficient, uses a smaller, more reliable crew and I have the ability to work nearly year around. I felt it gave the greatest value,” Jeremy explained.

Currently, forty percent of the stumpage Jeremy cuts is private timber which usually lies within close proximity to Duluth, Minnesota. The ease and capability to move around a couple pieces of equipment and cut smaller tracts is a major benefit for him and his business.

Working tracts close to home is very important to Jeremy as he is the father to three-year-old son, Soren, and one-year-old daughter, Svea, and a husband of seven years to wife, Ellie. Being able to balance family and business is of the utmost importance to him.

In January 2016, after just a little more than a year in business, Jeremy upgraded his forwarder. He now runs a new John Deere 1210E eight-wheel, operated by Rick Godden, Jr. Ricky raves on the superior visibility, maneuverability, fuel efficiency, and overall cab and operator comfort. Around the same time a very clean, low hour 700H crawler was added to equipment lineup.

“These products have been what Nortrax and Deere said they were going to be. The Waratah head has been outstanding and we have had very little unplanned downtime,” said Jeremy. “And Ricky loves the new forwarder,” he continued. The local product support and customer service are why Jeremy chooses John Deere and Nortrax. “Nortrax has a very strong team atmosphere and is a great a partner in my business. They are a critical core piece to my business’s success!.”

What’s next for Jeremy? With being a young, sound, organized supplier to local markets- those markets are looking for reliable partners that can deliver a consistent volume year round and he plans to capitalize on that with Nortrax and the other part of his team by his side.
