Hoekstra Logging

Sometimes you don’t choose your profession; your profession chooses you. Such was the case for the Haverinen brothers, Kevin and Dale, who began working in the woods at a young age in rural Menahga, Minnesota. When asked why they decided to begin logging Dale replied, “I’m not sure; it just sort of happened.”

The brothers began their work in 1996 cutting with chain saws and used a John Deere 730 tractor and a short-wood skidder to get the wood to the landing. “Back then we could go to the woods with a five gallon can of fuel in the truck and most of that was for the chain saws,” Dale said.

Realizing that this was something they both had a passion for, Kevin and Dale decided to try to grow the business. They purchased a C5 Tree Farmer skidder and other various pieces of equipment to support the growing business. They cut conventionally until 2008 when they decided to take the operation in a new direction and purchased a Fabtek 153 and a Fabtek 546C. Kevin ran the 153 and Dale ran the 546C. “It worked really well for us,” Kevin said. “It allowed Dale and me to do more work with less. It also allowed us to really do a good job of sorting and merchandising our wood.”

With a soft-wood market in their area, it made making purchasing decisions difficult but with their continuous optimism in 2009, they decided to purchase a John Deere 703JH to increase production and productivity of the business. They harvested with the cut-to-length team until the fall of 2013 when they decided that they wanted to raise production due to market demand for Aspen. Their fleet grew again when they added a Serco 300 and a John Deere 648GIII and began harvesting conventionally. They continue to harvest conventionally and have since added a new John Deere 848H to the team.

Dale said they enjoy working with Nortrax because, “It is a good company to work with; Parts and Service have been good to us and that is important to our business.” It is a unique story of two hard-working brothers from the middle of “Finlander country” that not only enjoy working together but sincerely enjoy what they do.
