Charles Plante and Sons Excavating and Paving Inc.

Charles Plante and Sons Excavating and Paving, Inc. is a longstanding tradition in the Springvale, Maine community. Current owner, Bill Plante’s father, Charlie Plante Sr., opened the business in 1976 working part-time digging cellar holes with a two-wheeldrive, rubber-tired backhoe and a 1956 six-wheeled dump truck.

Charlie Sr. worked at night driving trucks for a freight company and worked the first half of the day doing excavation. He did this for the next 10 years. Meanwhile, Bill and his younger brother, Jimmy, would work for their father after school and on weekends. After only two years in business, the company purchased a second rubber-tired backhoe and its first diesel-powered dump truck. Charlie and sons concentrated on providing quality work at a reasonable price and never turned down a job they thought they could handle.

In 1984, Charlie retired from trucking and both Bill and Jimmy began working for Charlie Sr. full time. It was during this time the company purchased its first excavator – opening a door to a new world of excavating business opportunities. This purchase led to more complex work building subdivisions and municipal work for the local town of Sanford, which included sewer, water, and various jobs for the highway department. Throughout the next 20 years the company slowly added more equipment to become better-rounded.

Fast forward to early-2000 when the business purchased its first John Deere -- a used 544H Wheel Loader. This was huge upgrade from the older loader. That was just the beginning of the company’s relationship with Deere. Previously, they owned many brands of excavators and made the switch to John Deere with the purchase of a 120C and a 230LC. Nortrax and John Deere were now becoming an important player in the business’s success. Bill stated, “I have run most brands of excavators and loaders and John Deere is what has worked best for us. Nortrax has always been there for me, and when I go in the Westbrook, Maine, branch they know who I am. I’m not just a number,” He explained.

Downtime for any business doesn’t work, and Charles Plante and Sons is no different. Typically, they shut down the excavation portion of the business during the winter to focus on bringing the trucks and equipment up to perfect working order. They work hard during favorable months, 10-12 hours a day, and with the help of Nortrax, they stay running at full speed.

In 2004, Charles Plante and Sons added paving into their toolbox, propelling them into an easy problem solver for customers. Typically, when the company does utility work for the local town they can do all the excavation work and then finish up with paving.

A major change came for the company when in 2008, Charlie Sr. retired and Bill took over the business. Charlie Sr. still helps out by installing new lawns and sanding in the winter months. Bill moved the shop to a new location and has one of the finest looking commercial buildings in the area. The business, which now consists of Bill’s two sons, Kyle and Zach, now has a fleet of trucks and equipment consisting mainly of John Deere and Hitachi.
