Beller Logging and Excavating
Gary Beller, owner of Beller Logging and Excavating, said that honesty and integrity is what drives him at work and that all his employees are “key” employees and vital to his business.

Growing Up Logger

Since Gary Beller was around age 12, growing up on the family farm he had a desire and passion for the woods and the work he now does.

At 17, Gary joined Beller Logging and Excavating in Carthage, New York. The company initially consisted of Gary, his dad, Tom, Francis Dicob and a 180 Massey Ferguson Tractor as their skidder. They cut four-foot pulp logs and loaded them onto trucks by hand to take them to the Champion Paper Mill.

In 1987, Gary took over the business and has progressed from his 180 Massey to a John Deere 450 Crawler Dozer with a winch, to a Clark skidder, and then to his first John Deere 540B Skidder. Eventually, he diversified into traditional full-tree harvesting with feller buncher and skidder along with a cut-to-length set up with a 608 Timberjack CTL and a forwarder.

When Gary first started out in the woods his dad gave him a bit of advice that he has lived by and feels has been the catalyst to his success. “Dad said if I ever steal even just one piece of wood from bordering land when harvesting; it will just go downhill from there,” Gary said. “If I ever get to the point of needing to steal a tree, I need to get out of the business. It all comes down to honesty.” Honesty and integrity is what drives him to do the work he does and, as a result, he has more than enough to keep him busy.

Diversity and leadership is key

While Beller is primarily a logging company, Gary and Tom cover a vast array of customer needs. Tom owns an excavating business so they are able to build their roads, harvest timber, chip for the biomass industry, and stump where they cut after harvesting.

The company currently owns two L-Series John Deere Skidders which represents two-thirds of their skidder fleet. Gary previously purchased a Tigercat 620C which they still run.

Being a small operation with few employees, every employee is key. From Gary’s son-in-law Pat Walseman, to Pat’s brother Erick, who operate most of the equipment, to truck driver Greg Roes. Gary said he doesn’t know where he would be without them.

Gary is very much one of the crew and won’t sit back and let the other employees do the work for him. He ensures that he is the first one in those tough spots so his employees don’t have to be. When it comes to running a chainsaw to fell a big tree (which is not uncommon), Gary is the one to take the responsibility and risk.

Deere keeps them running

Gary likes how the John Deere’s dealer network is everywhere so that parts and service can be had wherever he is working, even if it is far from his home dealership, Nortrax. “I was very impressed with the progress and improvements on the L Skidders over the previous H Skidders,” he said. “I’m also a big fan of how well Deere does on fuel consumption compared to the competition,” he noted.

Nortrax also has become a trusted partner for Beller Logging. “So far, I like everything about Nortrax,” Gary said. “The support and service has been good along with the all-makes parts so I can one-stop shop,” he explained.
